Boxing AMATEUR TOURNEY AT ASHBURTON
Bright Bouts For Season’s Opening
The Ashburton Boxing Association opened its 1957 season .with a bright amateur tournament last evening, which attracted a large audience. The boxing was fast and exciting, with several close decisions.
D. Murphy, a Christchurch ban-tam-weight, making his first ring appearance, impressed with a win over P. Wills, an experienced Ashburton boxer. Wills gave Murphy a torrid time in the opening round, but Murphy, boxing with the coolness of a veteran, counter-punched his way out of trouble and took the initiative for a popular win. K. Pope made his boxing debut in Christchurch last week with a knock-out. decision and gained his second knock-out win by beating a solid boxer, B. McLachlin, of Studholme. Pope, who has all the marks of a future champion, stalked his opponent relentlessly, giving him no time to settle or counter-punch. Results were:—
