DULLES TO RESIGN?
U.S. Cabinet Changes (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 29. Five members of President Eisenhower’s Cabinet, including the Secretary of State (Mr Dulles), may resign soon, according to informed Republican circles quoted by the United Press. The Defence Secretary (Mr Charles Wilson) and the Treasury Secretary (Mr George Humphrey) have previously been reported ready to return to private life. The Republican circles said the other two Cabinet members .who might resign soon were the Commerce Secretary (Mr Sinclair Weeks) and the Postmaster-Gen-eral (Mr Arthur Summerfield). Mr Wilson and Mr Humphrey were expected to stay on until alter the outcome of the present Congressional fights over appropriations, defence, and taxes. Mr Wilson’s resignation has been rumoured, and denied, for months. Reports that Mr Humphrey would leave sprang up last week, and the Treasury Secretary himself dropped a strong hint that he planned to resign soon. Several people have been discussed in Republican circles as possible successors to Messrs Humphrey, Weeks, and Summerfield. If Mr Dulles resigns, he will probably be succeeded by the Under-Secretary of State, Mr •Christian Herter. The DeputyDefence Secretary, Mr Donald Quarles, has been described as the most likely successor to Mr Wilson.
