FENCE COLLAPSES BEHIND QUEEN
Incident At Horse Trials (N.Z. Press Association Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, April 27. A fence collapsed just behind the Queen under the pressure of spectators at the Badminton horse trials yesterday. No-one was hurt. It was a day of informality for . the Royal family watching the annual three-day horse event on the Duke of Beaufort’s estate. Prince Philip first drove her up the steeplechase course. She stood on a farm-cart and on the bonnet of a car to get a good view. Then to reach the most exciting stage of the trial, the quarry jump over a 15ft pit, the Prince drove her to a position in front of a stake and wire fence against which pressed an eager crowd. The Queen, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret settled down on rugs. The fence, a few feet behind the Queen, gave way under the pressure of the crowd. Women and children fell at the back of her. Police and officials re-erected the fence.
