Boxing CAREER OF CLIVE STEWART

Fight With George Barnes In May (N.Z. Press Association Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) MELBOURNE, April 27. The British welter-weight champion, George Barnes, will fight the Queensland middleweight, Clive Stewart, in a nontitle contest at Sydney Stadium on May 13 or 20, the stadium’s general manager, Mr R. Lean, said in Melbourne today. Stewart, who is 20, has won 39 of his 40 bouts to date, 37 of them inside the distance. He has been haHed as Australia’s best young boxing prospect. In Melbourne last night, Stewart scored a brilliant win over the experienced Italian middle r weight, Luigi Coluzzi. No weight limit has been set for the match against Barnes, but the champion is expected to be about lOst 121 b and Stewart list 21b. After Barnes, Stewart will meet either the Frenchman, Jean Roellet, or the Italian middle-weight champion, Guido Mazzinghi, in Melbourne.

Kitione Lave On Way To Canada

(N.Z. Press Association Copyright) LONDON, April 26. The Tongan heavy-weight, Kitione Lave, left Britain for Canada tonight for an intensive course of coaching and training. His manager, Mr Vin Conboy, said that Lave had been consistently sidestepped by leading British heavy-weights. “All efforts to persuade them to enter the ring with him have failed,” Mr Conboy said. He has begun negotiations with a Canadian syndicate with a view to taking Lave nearer his ambition of fighting for the world championship.

Hogan Bassey Wins Bout In U.S.

WASHINGTON, April 27. Hogan (Kid) Bassey, of Nigeria the British Empire feather-weight boxing champion, last night won a unanimous decision over Miguel Berrios, of Puerto Rico, and thus gained the right for a chance at the vacant world title.

Bassey survived*a knock-down In the tenth round to .score an overwhelming points victory. x referee scored the fight 117 to 108 points in Bassey’s favour. One ° judges had a similar score ?P o d the other judge made it 118 to 108 points, m Bassey’s favour. Bassey had entered the ring the underdog in the betting, but won practically as he pleased. Bassey has now qualified to meet Chenf Hamia (France) for the world championship, which was left vacant /■tt the retirement of Sandy Saddler (United States). Bassey weighed Bst 131 b and Berrios Bst ll’ilb.
