GREAT PETER SURPRISES
Foley Memorial At Avondale
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 28. The aged Ellerslie gelding. Great Peter, caused a surprise when he finished strongly for a length victory over San Diego and Innes Lass in the Foley Memorial Handicap, the first leg of the double, at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday. It was Great Peter’s first success for four years, and he paid £39 14s for a win and £lO 4s 6d for a place. Great Peter was capably handled by the stable apprentice, W. N. Flower. San Diego was the unlucky runner. He lost a good position with seven furlongs to go, and he was forced to run over a lot of extra ground afterwards. The favourite, Jack’s Count, beat Red Eagle by half a head in the second leg, the Mt. Roskill Handicap. The double paid £246 10s for £l.
