WOODVILLE MEETING

Simon’s Pride Wins Well (New Zealand Press Assoctatlcn) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 28. Finishing strongly from about sixth at the turn, Simon’s Pride gained an overdue win when he took the April Handicap, first leg of the double, at Woodville on Saturday, by a length from The Vandal, with Mama Mia finishing strongly from the middle for a good third, ahead of The Wake. It was a good performance by Simon’s Pride as he ran in twice in the last furlong. Once straightened up, he finished too well for the others. Postman and Monogram fought out a stirring battle in the second leg, the Telegraph Handicap, with Postman winning by a nose. Sarabah was a good third after not having much room in which to work, and Calm Ruler was right up fourth. The double dividend was £9O 3s 6d for £l. The Gaisford Memorial Steeples was full of incident, with many runners losing winning chances by either falling or being checked by fallen horses. Azurite was the winner at long odds, from the fast finishing and unlucky Million Dollar, with Fleetfellow a good third. The track was on the soft side although it was drying out rapidly as the day progressed. There was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £58,572, compared with £66,630 last year, a decrease of £BO5B. Results:— HOPELANDS HURDLES HANDICAP, of £500; one mile and five furlongs.—3, 5 SON RAE (1) 10-3 B. L.
