HOT FAVOURITE FAILS IN GIMCRACK
The hot favourite, Great Sensation, could beat only one home after failing to jump out quickly in the Gimcrack Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. The Wingatui-trained Cassock gelding carried £5160 of a total of £9942 10s on the race. Great Sensation’s rider, W. D. Skelton, told the stipendiary steward, Mr H. B. Lorigan, that he had missed the jump-out. He had improved a few places, but the horse was not running properly. The race was decisively won by the third favourite, Cheyenne, which had not raced earlier at the meeting. Cheyenne was one of the best beginners, and W. Hanlin soon had him trailing Beau ReVere, which was joined by Bagatelle going to the half-mile. Cheyenne ran past Bagatelle into the lead going to the furlong and won by a length from Lord Fane, a fast finisher. Lord Fane was a good way from the leaders at the halfmile, but showed up about six i places back on the home turn and was fourth past the furlong. Lord Fane beat Bagatelle by a head for second. Winning Treasure, which was third starting the last furlong, and always well placed earlier, was three-quarters of a length back, fourth. Solstice was running on for fifth ahead of Almay, whirh was always well up. Neck Victory in Hurdles Flying Doctor outstayed Walkova for a narrow win in the Peerswick Hurdles. A weakening ninth in the hurdles on the second day of the meeting. Flying Doctor ran this race out strongly and won by a neck from Walkova, which tried to lead all the way. The favourite, Native King, was running on for third, another neck back, and a length clear of Sir Gerald. Flying Doctor had 10 horses ahead of him at the mile, but improved four places going to the half-mile, and showed up alongside Brown Baron and Bosky on the home turn, where Walkova was going strongly in the lead and Sir Gerald was a clear second. Walkova still held a clear lead going past the furlong, and the post MERIVALE HANDICAP, Of £5OO. One mile and a quarter. 3. 3—O. F. Watson’s b m SUN HOUSE (7) by Sun King— Lighthouse 4yrs 8-4 B. W. was near when he was mastered by the Wingatui jumper. Native King was running on towards the inner for his third. He was just in front of Flying Doctor at the half-mile, but was behind him at the last flight. Sir Gerald was always close to the lead, and a clear second on the home turn. Brown Baron was always fairly well up, but did not run the race out strongly enough to reach a place. He was fifth, three lengths clear of Bosky, which weakened towards the end. Jolly Miller and Milling Bay were the only runners not to finish. Jolly Miller fell at the six furlongs when in the middle of the field, and Milling Bay came down at the last flight when beaten off. Won Unchallenged Arctic Sun, the runner-up to Expedition on the second day of the meeting, decisively won the Yaldhurst Handicap. He ran past the weakening Rome Into thje lead going to the furlong, and was unchallenged after that. Glen Carron finished a shade better than Skyrider, Sir Edwin and Asunder in a spectacular finish for second. Arctic Sun was in the trailing position alongside Sir Edwin and behind Rome early in the race, and stayed there to the home turn. Skyrider moved through on the inner to challenge after straightening up, but Arctic Sun went clear going to the furlong and won decisively by a length and a half. Glen Carron, fifth on the home turn, caught Skyrider and Sir Edwin near the nost and beat them for second, a nose and half a head separating them. Asunder, which was just behind Glen Carron at the halfmile, ran on for a close fifth, but a faster finisher was Porcelain Prince (sixth), which drifted towards the tail of the field early in the race and was a good way from the lead to the home turn. The weakening Rome was the best of the others, most of which were done on the home turn. Tight Finish . T h 5 ee of the two-year-olds provided one of the most spectacular daV in the Rlch ' , The „ H ?? Sharp, the lone North Island representative, led into the last furlong, and though shortening stride closer to home, lasted to win by half a neck from the win favourite, Sarcelle. Lucky Gay was a nose back third. S, ar S? 4 1 ? e , and Sharp were fourth and fifth in the Champagne Stakes PZ 1 V?, e . first day of the meeting. In the Richmond Handicap Sarcelle had one of the wide barrier positions and that could have cost her victory. Sharp wa s away well from the middle of the field and led to the course proper alongside Lucky Gay Miss Fire, Ratltfarnham, and Come On Boy were in the next line, and Sarcelle and Fldells were next, with Royal Avon, Gold Crown, Angelsey. All Fair, and Peraea closest of the others. Sharp had a slight lead starting the last furlong. Sarcelle finished strongly on the outside of Lucky Gay, but just failed to get up. Lucky Gay also ran the race out strongly for third a length ahead of Royal Avon. Fidelis was fifth and All Fair was running on for -sixth ahead of the weakening Miss Fire. Easy for Sun House Sun House clearly outstayed the others in the Merivale Handicap, drawing away in the last furlong and a half to win by two and a half lengths from Masai, which beat his bracketed mate Steadfast by half a length. Sun House, a four-year-old halfsister to the V.R.C Oaks winner Innesfell, won the Autumn Plate for Mr O. F. Watson on the first day of the meeting, and was sixth in the Shirley Handicap on the second day. B. W. McDonald had Sun House well placed behind the leading bunch coming to the straight where the win favourite, Maracaibo, was dropping back after pulling hard in the lead from the early stages. Dart Away was clear on the turn, but Sun House dashed past him into the lead going the furlong and quickly had the race in hand. Masai and Steadfast made their runs from well back and were unchallenged for second and third. Dart Away was a weakening fourth two lengths and a half behind Steadfast. The others, led home by Neptune’s Pride, were beaten, off. Maracaibo beat only three stragglers home.
