Smyslov, Of Russia Beats Botvinnik (N.Z. Press Associdtion Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) A MOSCOW, April 27. Vasily Smyslov, of Russia, today won the world chess championship by gaining a winning lead in his 24-game match with the defending champion, Mikhail Botvinnik, also of Russia. The twenty-second game in the series, played today, was declared a draw after the eleventh move. The draw gave Smyslov, who is 25, a lead of 12J points to 9£ points. The championship match began in Moscow on March 5. The last championship series, in 1954, ended in a draw with Botvinnik, 45, retaining his title. Smyslov, a grandmaster, won the right to challenge again by defeating other leading world players in the championship candidates’ tournament held in Amsterdam last year.
