Women Owners' Successes At Riccarton On Saturday

In glorious autumn sunshine the Canterbury Jockey Club held the third programme of its Easter meeting at Riccarton on Saturday —a day of special favour for women patrons. It was a day when women could wear with confidence their smartest autumn ensembles, and it was a day to remember J:or several women owners. Miss V. M. H. Nichols, of Oamaru, had a popular win with her horse, Arctic Sun, which won the Yaldhurst Handicap. Miss Nichols has been a successful breeder of racehorses and show horses for many years. Dreenagh was another good performer she bred and raced as well as Arctic Sun.

Cheyenne, winner of the Gimcrack Handicap, was bred and is owned by Mrs L. K. Page, of Upper Riccarton. Melinda Jane, a sister to Cheyenne, and a halfbrother, Demand, were also bred by Mrs Page, and have carried her colours to victory many times. Minor placings were filled on Saturday by several horses owned individually or in partnership by women. They included Mesdames W. P. Pateman, F. A. Roberts. H. D. Greenwood, V. A. Cook, and C. L. Austin. Attractive Frocking Frocking was more attractive at Riccarton on Saturday than it had been earlier in the meeting because the day was ideal for suits and frocks. Wild rice, the seasons newest shade, was the

most popular colour on the stands. It was seen in smart sheath frocks, fitting suits, loose jackets, and in hats of the latest styles Splashes of colour came from burnt orange, ming blue, gold, pink, gay green and red hats and frocks, which stood out vividly against the fresh green of the track and lawns. 1920’s Look A loose-fitting cardigan suit of grey jersey, worn with a petunia pink velvet Garbo slouch, had a look of the 1920’s about it; a geranium red velvet coat cut on Empire lines, topped by a widebrimmed black pleated taffeta hat, indicated fashion’s inspiration from another period. Up-to-the-minute 1957 was the emerald green clutch coat, worn over black jersey cloth and with a tallcrowned black hat banded in coffee. Luncheon Guests Mr G. H. Grigg, chairman of the committee, and Mrs Grigg entertained a large party of specially invited guests at luncheon. These included Group Captain T. J. de Lange, newly-appointed commanding officer of the R.N.Z.A.F. station, Wigram, and Mrs de Lange, and delegates to the recent Dominion legal conference, among whom were Mr Justice McCarthy and Mrs McCarthy, Judge Dalglish and Mrs Dalglish, Mr T. P. Cleary, president of the -New Zealand Law i Society, and Mrs Cleary.
