High Office For U.S. Woman American women continue to gain new ground in high public office. The latest male stronghold to be captured is the important post of Associate Presidential Press Secretary. The first woman to be given this job 'is Mrs Anne Williams Wheaton, a handsome silverhaired woman in her sixties whose chief hobby is cooking. She will now be assistant to White House Press Secretary, Mr James Hagerty, one of the most powerful figures in Washington. Mrs Wheaton has had plenty of experience in both journalism and public relations. In the early 1930’s she was a political reporter on a provincial newspaper; then she moved to Washington to take charge of public relations for women’s organisations. For 17 years, Mrs Wheaton was a director of women’s publicity for the Republican National Committee, and in 1952 she handled publicity for Mrs Mamie Eisenhower. As Assistant White House Press Secretary, her salary will be about £5OOO a year.
