Spy Charge Admitted
(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, Apl. 26. Jacob Albarn, one of three persons arrested on charges of spying for the Soviet Union, pleaded guilty today. Albarn, 64, pleaded guilty specifically to a charge of conspiring to obtain national defence secrets for transmission to Russia. Jack and Myra Soble, arrested with Albarn on spying charges, had pleaded guilty on April 10 to the same charge. The three were arrested last January and arraigned on a sixcount indictment. By pleading guilty to the second count of the indictment, they hope to by-pass the first count charging them with transmitting defence (a crime punishable by death under the 1950 Espionage Act). The charge to which they pleaded guilty carries a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a 10,000-dollar fine. Usually at the time of sentencing, other counts in the indictment are dismissed. Judge Richard Levet set May 3 for sentencing the three. Hoax Radio Call Suspected CEDUNA (South Australia), April 28. A mystery voice which gasped “I’m dying. . . . I’m dying of snakebite” over the outback radio on Friday is now thought to have been that of a prankster. Three calls for help were made in a high-pitched voice, apparently that of a woman, over the Ceduna network. The base bush radio operator at Ceduna, 350 miles north-west of Adelaide, said yesterday that he believed children playing “flying doctor” over a station transmitter had probably made the call. A 24-hour check over 200,000 square miles yesterday failed to explain the call. Caduceus* Win.— The New Zealand pacer, Caduceus, 5-2, won the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Harold Park, Sydney, last night, starting off a handicap of 36 yards. Radiant Venture (12 yards), 2-1, was second, and First Variety, off scratch, 9-2, was third.—Sydney, April 26. Author’s Death.— Phil Stong. author of many books, including “State Fair” and “The Farmer in the Dell,” died at his home in Washington, Connecticut, yesterday after a heart attack. He was 58 years old.—New York, April 27.
