WINTER TENNIS

There is an indication of increased enthusiasm among Canterbury tennis players in the revival of the annual winter competition* dormant for three

If only a few teams had been Killing to enter, this competition FO uld have been worthwhile—for providing winter sport for some who do not take part in other activities and for keeping in form those who play in the senior sumuser competitions. Hany players who have reached the highest standards in tennis have had at least some play all the year round. Canterbury players have lacked it in the last few seasons. The 1957 winter competition will begin-at Wilding Park today with eight teams —Opawa, North Linwood, Elmwood, Ellesmere, Woolston, Avonside, Waimairi, and Cathedral. All are men s teams because the entry from the women was not enough to form a competition. Opawa Team Winner of the summer competition, Opawa, will attempt to extend its record and it will be led by the third member of the usual team, M. I. C. Norden, who joined the club last year after coming from Auckland. He had several good wins in the summer competition. Among the other members of the team will be T. Jackson and M. Crozier M. J. Beatty, another senior summer player, will lead the North Linwood team. The club is one which can be counted on to show keenness for all competitions and tournaments. T. Harneiss, who played top for the North Linwood senior reserve side, P Wylie, B. Prisk and J. Ewart are others who will Drobably be in the team. Promising juniors D. Marshall and D. Jamieson, will be in the Elmwood side, with L. Martin and R. Christie. Marshall is a player who has improved considably in the last season and he gave a specially pleasing display in the Easter tournament earlier this week, when ne fully extended the first seed, G. A. Burton Ellesmere One of the best features of this winter competition is the entry of the Ellesmere team. Ellesmere has always acquitted itself well at the annual town-country tournament. and this team—l Jones, A Watkins. D. Walklin and R McGill—should give a good account of itself. The other teams are:— Woolston.—D. Adair, E. Lane. J. Logie and D. Forbes.

Avonside.—B. Southam. W. Southam, F. Horgan and B. Leopold.

Waimairi.—W. Thom, J Beddis. A. Black and A. J Knight. Cathedral—A. RogaL T Gibson. J. Gilmore and M Hobby
