More Major U.S. Crime

(Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 24. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said today that major United States crimes last year increased by 13.3 per cent, over 1955, and that nearly 46 per cent, of the arrests in such cases in urban areas were of juveniles under 18. Statistics showed th a. 2,563,150 major crimes were committed last year—3oo,7oo more than in 1955 and the highest total for any 12month period. The F. 8.1. director, Mr J. Edgar Hoover, commented: "A significant factor in this upsurge of crime is the fact that crimes have increased almost four times as fast as the nation’s population since 1950.’*

The report listed these percentage increases for other crimes: larceny 16.7 per cent., car thefts 16.1 per cent., burglaries 6.7 per cent., rape 6.3 per cent., aggravated assault 4 per cent., murder and non-negligent manslaughter 1.8 per cent., negligent manslaughter 0.7 per cent. “There was a major crime committed every 12.3 seconds during 1956,” the F. 8.1. said. “Every 4.1 minutes, there was a crime of murder, manslaughter, rape or assault to kill.”
