Cricket N.Z. UNIVERSITY BEATS OTAGO
Win In Last Over
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 25. New Zealand University beat Otago by two wickets yesterday, after a declaration by B. Sutcliffe gave the students a winning chance. The University team had to score 171 runs in 150 minutes, and completed the total off the second to last ball of the day.
The early University batsmen scored at an even rate in the second innings, but a slump in the middle, when W. S. Haig and Sutcliffe took quick wickets each, swung the game Otago’s way. D. Gallop and M. McElroy, however, played exhilarating cricket in the last half-hour.
Sutcliffe’s declaration after the Otago batsmen had added 54 runs in the second innings was well timed, and did much to give the match its close finish. University struggled during the morning’s play to avoid the follow-on, but failed to make enough runs. After lunch, however. Sutcliffe did not enforce the followon, and the fine display by both teams justified his action. Scores:— UNIVERSITY First Innings I. Axford, b Cameron .. .. 28 R. Hunter, b Haig .. 8 J. TRAVELLERS’ TEAM
Australian Visit Arranged
During the Australian cricket test series against England in 1958-59, a team made up from members of the Canterbury Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association will tour Victoria as the guests of the Victorian C.T.A.
Besides seeing the test matches, the team will play a Victorian association team, and will probably also visit Sydney and Adelaide.
Arrangements for the tour were begun when several Canterbury association members visited Melbourne for the Olympic Games. The actual proposal for the tour came from the president of the Canterbury association (Mr J. F. M. Marriner). The Canterbury side will be selected from members of the association’s cricket team, which includes several players of note. One of them. O. R. D. Whitford, is a former Canterbury representative wicket-keeper.
