RACING 140,620gns Paid For 167 Yearlings At Sydney Sale
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright)
SYDNEY, April 25. The second day of the Sydney yearling sales yesterday was the biggest bloodstock sale ever held in Australia. A new record aggregate for a single day’s sale of 140,620gns was set, and there was also a record average price of 842gns. The aggregate for 167 lots topped the record set in 1955 by 1500gns. The Star Kingdom draft from Baramul Stud dominated the sale. Five colts by Star Kingdom brought a total of 18,950sns—the best figures for any five lots from any stallion in Australia. Two brought 5000gns each. Bidding for Star Kingdom’s progeny brought gasps from the big crowd, developing into a roar as the prices soared. First of the Star Kingdom's brought into the ring, a colt from Rara Pleasure, brought ar opening bid of 3000gns. This was immediately followed by one of 3500, then 4000 and 4500. Then in successive hundreds it went up to 5000 gns, where Mr Adolf Basser won out. The whole transaction took less than 30 seconds. While Star Kingdoms high-lighted the sale, almost as much interest was shown in the first yearlings by Flying Missel, which stands at Widden Stud. Four of Flying Missel’s progeny were sold today—three colts and one filly—for a total of 10,100gns. Fred Hoysted, Melbourne, trainer of the New Zealand champion Rising Fast, and now Syntax, paid 3300gns for a Mewtown Wonder filly from Maderson. This was the highest price of the sale for a filly. The Sydney trainer, T. J. Smith, who has had considerable success with the Newtown Wonders, was the biggest buyer of yesterday’s draft. Sales included:— x Account E. N. Larkin. REDCRAZE’S NEXT START
Race At Randwick Tomorrow
(N.Z. Press Association Copyright) SYDNEY. April 25.
The New Zealand horses. Redcraze and Monte Carlo, will take their place in the best weight-for-age field of the year, in the £5OOO Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
The Victorian stayer. Sailor’s Guide, Sydney Cup winner Electro. Melbourne Cup winner Evening Peal, and Redcraze’s conqueror in the Chipping Norton Stakes, Mac’s Amber, will be the other runners.
Monte Carlo is a surprise starter, because it was announced. after his Sydney Cup failure that he would be spelled until spring, but his trainer. Frank Dalton, is so pleased with the colt that he has decided to race him once more before the spell.
No matter how Monte Carlo runs in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, he will not be sent to Brisbane for the winter carnival. His main mission is the 1957 Melbourne Cup. A win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes will make Redcraze the top stake winner in Australia. He is looking as well as ever and went over a mile and a quarter in 2min 21sec today. He ran the last five in Imin Slasec, and the last two in 25sec.
The Sydney Cup winner, Electro, will be sent to Brisbane to be trained for the £12,000 Brisbane Cup after his start next Saturday. The Wellington Cup winner. Sombrero (third to Electro in the Sydney Cup) will also go to Brisbane for the cup there. He will be accompanied by On Parade. It is expected the two horses will remain in Brisbane until after the Exhibition meeting in August, so that they should be there for the Ten Thousand and the Doomben Cup in July. Sombrero and On Parade are two of a large contingent of New Zealand horses which will be in Brisbane for the Brisbane Cup meetiifg.
