PYLONS CARRIED BY ROAD
Farmers Complain
A complaint that State Hydroelectric Department pylons were b ® in S transported from Christchurch to Hanmer Sorings by road when there were ample facilities for them to be carried by rail was made by an Amuri member of the provincial executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers at a meeting on Wednesday. Mr A. C. R. Robinson said that he often met articulated trucks carrying the pylons and could see no reason why the pylons should not be handled by rail to Culverden. “They have got the facilities for loading at Culverden and it is a bit annoying for farmers to see this sort of thing.” Mr D. W. Gray moved that the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine) and the Minister in charge of the State Hydro-electric Department (Mr W. S. Goosman) be advised of the situation. There might be some double handling of the pylons if they were transported by rail, said Mr D. G. McGrath. He warned that farmers might get a bit of “backlash” if they complained to the Government. Mr Gray’s motion was carried.
