Rugby COUNTRY TEAMS IN AUSTRALIA
Strong Opposition For All Blacks
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 pjn.) SYDNEY, April 23. Rugby Union experts agreed today that the All Blacks can expect some tough encounters against country zone teams in their Australian tour starting next month.
The splendid form of country teams in a country carnival being held in Sydney emphasises the formidable nature of the All Blacks’ early tour programme. Even the All Blacks* first rivals, the combined Illawarra side, shaped solidly although beaten in the opening round of the country carnival yesterday. Western and Central Western teams provided the star turns of the day and indicated that they will be a menace to the All Blacks when they combine for the tourists* third match at Warren on May 22. This game, coming between the New South Wales match and the first test, will be a trial for the All Blacks’ reserve playing strength.
Central West, with a sprinkling of test and State players, defeated Newcastle by 16 points to 15. Western Zone surprised by upsetting Canberra 14 points to eight. New England zone, the AU Blacks* opponents immediately foUowing the second test in Brisbane, lost to a strong Riverina Side, which will meet the All Blacks at Wagga on June 19. The Australian half, Cyril Burke, led the Newcastle team, which should be at its best for the All Blacks* match at Newcastle on June 8.
