CHRISTCHURCH WOMAN 102
Birthday Celebrated Yesterday
Mrs Fanny Denshire, of Jacksons road, Christchurch, was 102 years old yesterday. Believed to be one of the oldest women in Christchurch, Mrs Denshire was born in Nelson on April 23, 1855. Her father, Mr J. R. Dodson, who settled in Nelson in 1854, was the first Mayor of the city. The family later returned to England and Mrs Denshire was educated at a girls’ college at Bath. She made three tours round the world before marrying Mr W. M. Denshire and settling on his sheep station, Thetford, near Seafield. Mrs Denshire was an accomplished horsewoman, and was a keen follower of hounds. She was also a fine singer. Her only son was killed in World War I, and when her husband died a little later the family moved to Christchurch. She lives with her three daughters, Misses Kathleen, Gladys, and Dorothy Denshire. Her eyesight is still good and one of her main occupations is reading. Mrs Denshire has always been a staunch churchgoer and has been a member of St. Barnabas’ Church for 37 years.
