Japan’s Shipbuilding.— Lloyd’s register of shipping reports that Japan became the world’s leading shipbuilding nation in 1956. Japanese yards launched 325 vessels with a total volume of 1,746,429 gross tons—more than double the Japanese output in 1955. Great Britain, ranking second, launched 275 ships totalling 1.383,387 tons. Other leading shipbuilding nations, in order, were the Federal Republic of Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands, Italy, France, Norway, the United States and Denmark.—London.
