THREE DIE IN COLLISION
R.N.Z.N. Officer And Children (N.Z. Press Association Copyright) LONDON, April 22. Three members of a New Zealand family were killed and a fourth was seriously injured on the main road at Clifton Moor, two miles south of Penrith, Cumberland, today. The family, Commander and Mrs Twofciey and their two children, a boy aged 10 and a girl aged 7, were travelling south when their car was in collision with a 10-ton motor lorry and trailer going in the opposite direction. The children were killed outright and the father died on the way to the hospital. Those killed were: Commander Bernard Lawrence Twomey, of the Royal New Zealand Navy; his son, David lan; and daughter, Ann Rosemary. The mother, Mrs Shirley Twomey, was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary with multiple injuries. Lieutenant-Commander Twomey was born at Island Bay and was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. He joined the Royal New Zealand Navy in December, 1940. He was promoted .to LieutenantCommander in December, 1950, and when the frigate Tutira sailed from Auckland in July, 1950, to serve in Korean waters, he commanded her. He relinquished this command in May, 1951, and later commanded the New Zealand training minesweeper Kiwi. He also served in the cruisers Bellona and Black Prince. In March, 1956, he was given command of the New Zealand minesweeper Stawell and held this appointment to last January, when he left New Zealand for two years’ exchange duties with the Royal Navy.
