BROADWAY PLAYS OF YEAR
Awards To “My Fair Lady” (NJZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 22. The musical play “My Fair Lady” ran off wit|i the major share of honurs tonight in the annual presentation of stage awards by the American Theatre Wing. The late Eugene • O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night” received one of the silver medallions as a distinguished play of the year from March 1, 1956, to March 1, 1957. Winners of these awards are never described “best” or “first” —simply as distinguished or outstanding. Those connected with ‘‘My Fair Lady”—the musical version of Shaw’s "Pygmalion”—who won awards were: Rex Harrison, male musical star; Oliver Smith, scenic designer; Cecil Beaton, Costume designer; Moss Hart, director; Franz Allers, musical director. The other awards included: Male dramatic star —Fredric March, “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” Female dramatic star —Margaret Leighton, “Separate Tables.” Female musical star —Judy Holliday, “Bells are Ringing.” Feature or supporting actor — Frank Conroy, “The Potting Shed.”
Featured or supporting player— Peggy Vaus, “Auntie Marne.” Musical featured or supporting actor—Sydney Chaplin, “Bells are Ringing.” Musical featured or supporting actress—Edith Adams, “Li’l Abner.”
