RETRACING VOYAGE OF H.M.S. BEAGLE
Expedition Planned By Royal Society
The Royal Society of New Zealand has been asked to invite applications from persons wishing to join the research staff of an expedition across the Pacific to South America, which the Royal Society of London proposes to sponsor to mark the centenary of the first publication of Charles Darwin’s ideas on the origin of species.
The expedition will approximately retrace part of the course of H.M.S. Beagle in which Darwin sailed in 1831 to 1836. Scientific organisations in the British Commonwealth have agreed to cooperate.
It is expected that up to 12 persons from New Zealand in the general fields of zoology, botany, geology, and soil study will be able to join the expedition. The time required would be for a minimum of four months between May and October next year. Prospective participants are asked to consult with the president of the Canterbury branch of the society or with any member of the council.
