Reported New Soviet Bomb
(Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 23. Tokyo reports of a deadly new type of Soviet ground bomb which had produced a lethal alpha-ray fallout over Japan were publicised in Washington today. A spokesman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission said the reports were being studied, but, in line with the commission’s policy, only Mr Lewis Strauss, the . chairman, would be able to comment for the commission on this and any other report dealing with nuclear weapons. The spokesman added: “There is nothing new about alpha rays in connexion with nuclear reaction. It is well known that this type of radiation is not particularly penetrating.”
