Eric Sturgess to Retire. — Eric Sturgess, the 36-year-old South African lawn tennis champion, and twice a Wimbledon semi-finalist, is to retire from singles championship competition. The military investigating committee —comprising the Prime Minister, Dr. Khalidi, the Minister of the Interior, Mr Said el Mufti, and the Minister of Justice, Mr Majed Abdelhadi—was appointed two’ days ago. Last ?ight the Prime Minister criticised both former Chiefs of Staff for making public statements from Syria which were without foundation.
[Cairo radio quoted General Nuwar as accusing the United States Embassy in Amman of bringing “strong pressure to bear on me to make me form a military government and accept the Eisenhower doctrine.”]
The Prime Minister also criticised what had been broadcast by radio stations in certain Arab States. He warned all Jordanians not to pay attention to false rumours being reported by the enemy. “I also appeal to the Arab press
and radio in the Arab world to be cautious in comments and broadcasts until things resume their natural course,” he said. A meeting of the national steering committee of Jordan’s Leftwing parties yesterday called on the Government to resign to make room for a national all-party coalition and for the restoration of the military administration as it was a fortnight ago. Both Jordanian and Iraqi government spokesmen yesterday denied Egyptian reports that Iraqi troops had entered Jordan. In a statement quoted by the Egyptian-sponsored Middle East News Agency last night, the “free officers” of the Jordan Army called on soldiers and civilians to “rise up in a struggle to show their anger and indignation.”
