Roman Catholics And Ku Klux Klan
(Rec. 10 p.m.) GREENVILLE (South Carolina), April 23. A Ku Klux Klan officer said last night that his group had voted to admit Roman Catholics, formerly a target of Klansmen. Mr Bill Hendrix, who said he was imperial officer in charge of programmes of the knights of the Klan, said members of the imperial council from 21 States attended a meeting here during the last week-end. He said the council voted during the secret session on a new chairman and also voted to admit Roman Catholics. Commenting on the Klan’s announcement, the Rt. Rev. John Manning, Roman Catholic Bishop of the South Carolina diocese, said in Charleston: “The very nature of the Ku Klux Klan would prohibit any Catholic from joining. They are a professedly antiCatholic organisation. The idea is self-contradictory by its very nature. No serious Catholic would join.”
