ITALIAN SHIP ABANDONED
Rescue After Fire Breaks Out (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PENANG (North Malaya), April 21. The master of the Italian ship Nica, abandoned in flames in the Indian Ocean, radioed today from the British ship Troonbreeze that all members of his crew were well. Captain Marano, in a message to the Penang authorities, said that only one member of his 25-man crew had been injured, and he was not a stretcher case. Shipping circles at Penang said they understood from reports that the Nica was blazing “like a huge torch” when the crew was forced to put to sea in lifeboats. The Troonbreeze rescued all the Italian crew of seven officers and 18 seamen near the Andaman Islands, south of Rangoon. The 5000-ton Nica was in ballast when the fire broke out, probably starting from the engine room, the shipping authorities said. She was carrying the remnants of a cargo of asphalt which roared into flames.
