There were 880 cases of poliomyelitis notified to medical officers of health in New Zealand last year. This was 211 more than the previous year's figures and was the greatest number recorded since 1948, when there were 915 cases. The summer months proved to be the danger months. In January and February last year there were more than 200 cases each month, ancT more than 100 cases were recorded for both March and April.
