MACKENZIE SHOW HELD IN BRILLIANT WEATHER

The 59th annual Highland show of the Mackenzie County Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held in brilliant weather at Fairlie yesterday. The attendance has been exceded only once in the history of the association —last year—and the gate takings amounted to £938. A novel feature of the day was the parade of the South Canterbury Hunt’s pack of hounds. Many visitors at the show had never seen a hunting pack with the hunt. During the show music was supplied by four pipe bands which led the grand parade in mass formation. For such a large sheep producing area the entries in the flock sheep classes were disappointing in numbers, said Mr R. Oakley, of Ashburton, who judged the fine wool and Young Farmers’ Club sections. The entries were typical of the class required and although wet weather conditions were against the sheep those shown were a commendable lot. He was particularly pleased the Y.F.C. members had kept to type well in all their exhibits. The judge of the Romneys, Mr J. D. Rokjertson, of Gore, said he had been very impressed with the Romney ram hoggets. The top sheep were of good quality. Mr C. Stewart, of Timaru, who judged the South Suffolk sheep, said the entry as a whole was a good representation of the breed. The champion ewe, a one-shear, should be a good breeder. The champion ram was an excellent type. Entries in the Hampshire Downs section were very good but lacked competition. The champion cow exhibited by Portis Brothers was a particularly fine animal, said the judge, Mr J. C. Allfrey, of Waimate. The standard of dairy cattle had risen in the district since he had judged at Fairlie two years ago. Champion Hunter The outstanding horse in the jumping events was Miss Beverly Payne’s Topic, winner of the open international jump and champion hunter of the show. Horses were reaching a much higher standard in South Canterbury, said the judge of the international jumping events. Mr I. M. Ritchie, of Ashburton. Topic was the most versatile and consistent horse in the international jump and did two faultless rounds of the ten jumps. The teams event, with three teams entered, resulted in a clearcut win for the combined North Otago-South Canterbury team. This team had no faults; North Canterbury was second. Mr G. Coe, of Leeston, who judged the Group B ponies, thought that L. D. and J. D. Dunn’s Sari, which won the championship over 13 hands and up to 14.2 hands, was outstanding and would be hard to beat in any Canterbury show. Ponies were well catered for at the show, but Mr Coe thought the entries could have -been larger.

The jumping ponies were a credit to their young riders and proved the value of plenty of schooling. Ponies in Group A were judged by Mr L. Bennett, of Christchurch, and in this section the champion was exhibited by Miss V. Nichols. Mr E. H. Aubrey, of Oamaru, the judge of the hunters said that the exhibition of jumping was very high and up to metropolitan standard. Some of the leading jumpers in the South Island were among the entries.
