“The Press*' Special Service

DUNEDIN, April 22. When the annual Easter tournament of the New Zealand Universities was continued in Dunedin today, Canterbury won both the men’s and women’s section of the athletics, and also the cricket. Winners of individual events in the athletics were R. G. Ball, in the shot put and the javelin, and D. D. Leech, in the hammer throw. In the shot put, Ball, passed the previous record by three inches. Leech also passed

the record in this event. 5 D. McDonald had a good day, filling second place in both the 880 yards and the three miles. The mile relay team filled second place, but was disqualified because one runner cut in on an Otago runner. D Davison won the 220 yards, and filled second place in the 100 yards. Women Successful Misses J. Nixon and A. Macdonald were again successful in their events, with Miss Nixon winning the 75 yards and the 220 yards. Miss Macdonald was second in both these events, and also in'the hurdles. Miss E. M Baber won the women’s high jump, and the relay team was also successful. Canterbury lost its final basketball race to Otago in the morning, to finish in third place in this sport. The yachting team of H. Walker, D. Adorian, and J. Godfrey repeated Canterbury’s 1956 success in winning the competition. In the postal shoot against the universities of the British Empire, the New Zealand Universities’ team scored 50 points more than last year’s winning team. Canterbury members of the team were R. Kingsley, A. M. Todd, T. Mercer, and R. Beamish. In the New Zealand Universities’ rowing team, which met the national eight yesterday, the only Canterbury representative was P. J. R. Spooner.
