QUEENSLAND PREMIER
Threat Of Expulsion
(N.Z. Press Association^Copyright) BRISBANE, April 20. Queensland’s Labour Premier. Mr Vincent Gair, faces the threat of expulsion from the Labour Party. The central executive of the Queensland branch of the party yesterday voted by 35 votes to 27 to ask Mr Gair to show cause why he should not be expelled from the party for failing to accept directions from the party. The vote to expel the Premier was the result of two years’ efforts by the party to gain the introduction of the statutory three weeks leave for workers under State awards.
Mr Gair has said that he approved in principle the three weeks’ leave policy, but the State’s economy could not stand it at present. Mr Gair will face the central executive of his party on Wednesday to defend his Government’s actions, and to plead against his expulsion. Many Labour Party officials fear that the Premier's expulsion would mean the defeat of the Labour Government in Queensland.
