50 Years On West End Stage

I am going on whether they like me or not,” Cicely Courtneidge told hundreds of admirers at a reception to celebrate her 50 years on the West End stage. She is now appearing in her first part in comedy without music. She made her debut on April 17, 1907, aged 14, in the comic opera “Tom Jones,*’ which her father, Mr Robert Courtneidge, helped adapt from Fielding’s novel; ‘‘l am a person who has never thought of years, how old I am, or how long I have been in show business,” said Miss Courtneidge. “I have never looked back, except at things I adore—and I adore people.” Her husband, Jack Hulbert, to whom she has been married 41 years, was unable to atterid. He is touring in the provinces.
