U.S. Merchant Fleet.—There were 1099 vessels of 1000 gross tons and over in the active oceangoing United States Merchant Fleet on February 1, 1957, according to the United States Maritime Administration. The number was unchanged from the same date a year ago. There were 65 government owned and 1034 privately owned ships in active service. These did not include privately owned ships temporarily inactive, or government owned vessels employed in loading grain for storage or undergoing repair.—Washington.
