Radio-Active Fish
Sir, —“The Press” of Saturday. April 6, printed a perturbing report under the heading, “Terrible Diseases from Eating Radio-active Fish.’’ I should be obliged if you would obtain more information about it. I am a keen salmon fisherman, and I should like to know if there is any chance of these fish being affected.—Yours, etc., SALMON. April 11, 1957. [“The chance of salmon being affected by radio-activity seems very remote,” said the Secretary for Marine (Mr G. L. O’Halloran). “It is known that, in the original northern home of these fish, the seaward movement is toward the colder northern waters. Although it is not certainly known, it is to be expected that salmon would run south to the colder water masses in their seaward movements, and hence away from centres of radio-activity.”
