Lake Manapouri

Sir, —It is good to read the letter of Arthur Lush, and know that one man who obviously knows his subject is battling against the despoiling of our incomparable lake scenery, even though his voice is that of one crying in the wilderness. Apart from the threat to the natural beauty of our scenery, which all the gold of Ophir cannot buy, scenery is our great asset—inducement for tourists. Over the beauty of Tekapo and Pukaki, through hydro-electric development, Ichabod must be written. Manapouri’s exquisite beauty is already marred by a rash of makeshift abodes; must it be further ravaged to help supply power for the North Island’s everwidening maw? Since waterpower must be developed, syhy not hear the voices of those who believe it can be done with less destruction? Oh, man! “Nature’s rough-handed foeman, keen to smite and mar the loveliness of the ages.”—Yours, etc., R.R.M. April 18, 1957.
