Convict-Author To Be Executed
SAN FRANCISCO, July 21. The California Supreme Court refused today to intervene in the execution of the convict-author, Caryl Chessman, scheduled for July 30. The Court, without comment, denied both Chessman’s plea to halt his execution and his accompanying plea for a rehearing of his case on the argument that the transcript on which his conviction was based waste error Chessman, author of Cell 2435. Death Row,” was convicted in 1948 of kiSnanping and rape. His book, which brought his case to national attention, was a self-analysis of a condemned man and criminal.
