WHERE THE POUND GOES

Sir,—One item of this year’s Budget, ■ as reported in “The Press” this morn- , ing under the heading. “Where Government Pound Goes,”i is, I think, very surprising and worth a great deal of consideration from every reader. It appears that 2s is to be spent on defence and 7s on social services and social security (nearly four times as much upon the latter as upoh the former). As it must be very clear to everybody that without defence or national security there could not possibly be any social services or social security, it might almost be in order to ask if the sums have not been nrinted in in the wrong order. Doubtless that would be an exaggeration, but the principle is there.—Yours, etc.. OBSERVER. July 23, 1954.
