CROCODILE DIES AT AQUARIUM

HEATER FAILS IN COLD WEATHER

One of the crocodiles and a number of tropical fish at the North Beach aquarium were killed by the frost when the main heat switch burned out early yesterday morning. The crocodiles were housed in a special tank in the aquarium building, and the water was kept at a temperature of 70 degrees. Everything was in order when, because of the expected frost, Mr Peter Taylor inspected the aquarium about 1 a.m., but in the morning the power was off and the temperature was down to 44 degrees. Mr J. O. Taylor, who is in charge of the aquarium, took the crocodiles inside, and all the available hot water was used to raise the temperature of the tanks. One of the crocodiles died, and Mr Taylor rang the hospital, which could not help, and Canterbury. University College for advice on saving the other. A stiff dose of whisky was suggested, and this, plus every effort to keep it soon revived it. Canterbury University College told Mr Taylor that it would like the body of the dead crocodile to examine, but he said that he would probably get it mounted.

Mr Taylor said he would try to buy another pair of crocodiles in England, and get them sent to New Zealand with tortoises he was buying there.
