Renewed Request By Japan

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.45 p.m.) GENEVA, July 22. The Inter-Sessional Committee of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade will discuss a renewed 'request by Japan for full membership of the agreement when it meets in Geneva on Monday. Japan needs a two-thirds majority of the 34 contracting parties to the agreement for full membership. She was granted associate membership in October, 1953. and 24 member nations subsequently signed a declaration regulating their commercial relations with Japan on the basis of that agreement. However, Britain, with Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Southern Rhodesia did not accept the declaration, i expressing fears of a revival of Japan’s pre-war “unfair : competition.”

Japan has now told the Inter-Ses-sional Committee that she believes that there are now no obstacles to negotiations for her full membership. Members of the Inter-Sessional Committee are Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile,. Cuba, France, Germany, India, Italy, Pakistan, Sweden, South Africa, Britain, and the United States.
