POTATOES FOR NORTH ISLAND
UNDERGRADE SHIPMENTS PROHIBITED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) _ WELLINGTON, July 8. The shipment of undergrade potatoes from the South Island to the North Island is prohibited under a Gazette notice published this evening. Mr V. J. McHugh, secretary of the Potato Board, said the board was convinced that an ample supply of potatoes would be available this season. The North Island market was somewhat congested, and lines of undergrade potatoes were frequently shipped on consignment and without a purchaser in view. This season, the proportion of lines of undergrade potatoes was greater than usual, and a surplus in the North Island would cause them to deteriorate more rapidly than if they had -been held in the South Island, said Mr McHugh. When accumulated North Inland stocks were reduced to normal reserves, the position would be reviewed. Mr McHugh said that individual lots of not more than two sacks were not affected by the order.
