Two Professionals In Lead On 69 TIMMS RETURNS CARDjOF 80 (Special Correspondent NXP.A.) LONDON, July 7. The British professionals Sam King and Bill Spence were the the end of the first round of the British open golf championship being played on the Royal Birkdale course, impeccable golf. He used a 50-year-old putter for which he paid two shillings, and returned a 69 King’s score was equalled later by Spence. Their 69’s equalled, the course record, set by Tony Harman in the qualifying round. . , „ Another British professional, Norman Sutton, returned a card of 70. John Jacobs (Britain), George Howard and the Argentinian, Tony Cerda, followed with 7rs. . . „ The only New Zealander who qualified, A. R. Timms, returned a card of 80 today. „ ~ ... The favourite, the South African. Bobby Locke, went round to 74, and the veteran American, Gene Sarazen, came home to 75. A gusty wind during the afternoon affected many of the players. Two days of dry weather quickened the greens and putting proved the downfall of many players. The Australian, Norman van Nida, who headed the qualifiers, dashed his hopes of winning the championship when he returned 76. His golf today was far below his usual standard. Two other Australians, the professional, Peter Thomson, of Victoria, and the Tasmanian amateur, Peter Toogood, are well to the running with 72 s. Doug. Bachli, of Victoria, who recently won the British amateur title, disappointed with 79. King played a perfect chip, shot at : the eighteenth hole for a birdie to ’ equal Harman’s record. King was out in 33 and home in 36. Spence, the 42-year-old Dartford professional, was out in 34 and home in 35. Par for Birkdale is 73—37 out and ’ 36 home.
Timms Putts Poorly Ron Timms, the only member of the New Zealand touring side to reach the championship proper, lost his putting tench at the wrong time and went round in a disappointing 80. “It is the first time my putter has let me down on the tour?’ he said afterwards. He three-putted five times in the round. He was out in 38 and home in 42. He had sixes at the 465 yards twelfth, and the 517 yards fourteenth. His card also included six fives He will need to make a big effort in the second round tomorrow if he is to be concerned in the final two rounds on Friday. Leading scores In the first round are:— W.
