OBITUARY

MRS Me A. GARWOOD Less than a month ago Mrs Mary Alice Garwood regularly took her daily walk in Sumner, although she was in her ninety-ninth year. AU her faculties were still keen and she was seldom ill. She died this week after a chill.

Mrs Garwood had a colourful and interesting life. She was born in England but until she was 12 years old she lived in Austria, where she was baptised, and to Denmark, where she learned to speak the language fluently. Her father, Mr C. E. Walkden, was then supervising the construction of railways. The family came to New Zealand 88 years ago in a sailing ship of 400 tons which took six months for the passage from England to Lyttelton. Mr Walkden became City Engineer of Christchurch. Years later his sonin law, Mr C. H. A. Dawe, also became City Engineer after Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson. With her husband, Mr J. D. Garwood, Mrs Garwood lived for many years at Akaroa. Mr Garwood was well-known as a storekeeper after early work on the Lyttelton tunnel. It is believed that he was also the first proprietor of the Hilltop Hotel. In Akaroa their home at Green, point was a popular coaching station and a centre of hospitality for visitors, including men of warships which used to anchor in the harbour. Mrs Garwood spent the whole of her adult life to Canterbury apart from holidays in Australia and South Africa. Lately she lived with her daughter to Sumner. Mrs Garwood is survived by her two daughters, Mrs H. J. Klingenstein, of Sumner, and Mrs C. Dawe, of Takapuna, Auckland. She had 24 great grandchildren.
