Death Sentence On Sudan Editor
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) KHARTOUM, July 5. A criminal court in Khartoum has recommended mercy for Awad Saleh, editor of the newspaper of the Umma (Independent) Party, whom it sentenced to death a few days ago for his part in the riots of March 1. The 34 persons killed during the riots included the British Commandant of the Khartoum Police.
The recommendation to mercy will be sent to the High Court of Appeal. Three other participants in the riot were sentenced to terms of imprisonment from life down to four years. The riots started as General Naguib of Egypt arrived to attend the opening of Sudan’s first Parliament.
