RICCARTON RAILWAY CROSSING
Sir, —Barrier gates would not help a driver who is silly enough in the first S place to overtake on a railway cross- t ing. Moreover, he who could not t put two and two together and tumble i to the cause when his visibility was so obscured by other vehicles that he J could not see the warning lights or j hear the bells ringing is either a fool, ■ or attempting suicide anyway. A transport vehicle with 70 passengers is also trusting luck a little too much. A train will not run down the road after it, or hit it at an intersection, but the drive from Sumner to Church Corner, must be far more harassing, as the ' driver must contend with hundreds of vehicles. The Riccarton Borough Council would do more good by limiting parking in the Straven shopping area, which, to my mincL is a greater threat to life than any railway crossing.—Yours, etc., FOR WHOM THE BELLS TOLL. July 7, 1954. Sir, —May I be permitted to use your space to express my appreciation to those bodies concerned in pressing for something better at Riccarton railway crossing. Barrier gates would perhaps be a vast improvement on its present 1 set-up, but, I feel, not the answer on such a busy thoroughfare. Subway ot ! overhead must ultimately come, so why not now?—Yours, etc., J.G.S. July 7, 1954. >
