TAXING AND SPENDING
Sir, —Your correspondent R. Finch proves conclusively (perhaps unwittingly) that Mr Nash did not say what Mr Algie alleged he did. Any sensible person realises that “taking all money available inside existing procedure” applies only to surplus money after the legitimate needs of the individual concerned have been met. “It is not what we take from you but what you have left that counts” (Mr Nash). What construction Mr Algie puts on utterances are his own concern, not necessarily acceptable to others. Mr Holland once said social security was not applied Christianity but applied lunacy under certain conditions. He repeatedly claimed that his words were misconstrued by his opponents. Apparently it was quite correct for Mr Holland to claim qualifications, but not for Mr Nash. No, a leopard does not change his< spots, but National Party adherents can certainly change their opinions.—Yours, etc., TOM BRYCE. July 6, 1954.
