SOCKBURN-STYX RAILWAY
Sir,—ln “The Press” of last Tuesday Mr A. Hutchison protests “against the Railway Department’s intention to construct a line from Sockbum to Styx.” This, if correct, is enlightening. His question: “Who I wants this line, and for what pur- ! pose?” is hard to answer. It cannot ’ in any way serve the country through which it will go. If, then, it is an engineers’ scheme to service services
already existing, it. is preposterous to saddle the country with such a thing, regardless of other considerations. Chief among those ignored, - and perhaps covering all, is regionalism, and regional planning. This, of course, dofes not enter into the calculations of departmental technicians. “What is everybody’s business is nobody's business,” is very true; but I hope that your readers will make these intermittent and almost lone protests a call to caution.—Yours, etc.. W. R. EARLY. Hornby, July 7, 1954. -
