PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO IMPORT DUTIES—BUTTONS, SPORTING REQUISITES, AND FISHING-TACKLE 89. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed under the following tariff items: TARIFF ITEM 146: Buttons, crochet, and similar. TARIFF ITEM 147: Buttons, n.e.i. The present rates of import duty in respect of these items are: TARIFF ITEM 146—British Preferential Free, Most Favoured Nation 20 per cent., General 20 per cent.* TARIFF ITEM 147—British Preferential 3 per cent.. General 3 per cent. ’Plus surtax at the rate of ninefortieths of the amount of duty. 90. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed on the goods mentioned hereunder and included in the, following tariff items: TARIFF ITEM 239 (1): Sporting, gaming, and athletic requisites, n.e.i.. including billiard requisites. n.e.i. EX TARIFF ITEM 239 ( 2): Fishing-tackle, n.e.i., including artificial flies and other baited hooks. The present rates of import duty in respect of these items are: British Preferential 20 per cent., Australian Agreement 25 per cent.. Most Favoured Nation 45 per cent., General 50 per cent., plus surtax at the rate of ninefortieths of the amount of duty. During the course of these inquiries the Board will consider the desirability of reclassifying the goods in question for

In addition, the Board will consider whether such of the goods in question, as are now subject to import licensing should be exempted from the requirements of import licensing, and in respect of such of the goods in question as are already exempt, whether import licensing should be reimposed in fespect of any of them. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of these tariff items, the Board will hold a public inquiry in the Board Room, First noor, Departmental Building, Stout street, Wellington.
