Choice Of President In 1955
CONGREGATIONAL LEADER CHOSEN (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 6. Dr. Leslie Weatherhead, aged 61, the Minister of the City Temple, London—“the Cathedral of Congregationalism.” and Britain’s principle Congregational Church, was today elected President of the Methodist Conference for 1955. ‘ “This is the first time in our history we invited a Congregational minister to be our President,” a spokesman said. “It is a remarkable gesture of church unity.” Dr. Weatherhead, actually a Methodist, became leader of the Congregational Church by his appointment to the City Temple and was given special permission to accept the post. A recognised authority on spiritual healing, and a well-known broadcaster, preacher and writer. Dr. Weatherhead entered the Ministry after serving as a lieutenant in the Indian Army in World War I.
