PROGRESS LEAGUE’S ORGANISATION

CREATION OF CENTRAL EXECUTIVE URGED

The formation of an inner central executive in the Canterbury Progress League to act as a “spearpoint” in the organisation’s work, was suggested by Mr W. Machin at the annual meeting yesterday. Mr Machin said he envisaged a committee of six to eight men, with a chairman who would be in office for many years, to deal with matters as they arose from day to day. In the view of some people, the league had drifted into ineffectiveness, he said. “But we know that the league has the ball at its feet, and we can proudly present to the public of Canterbury our aim to get behind movements for the expansion and progress of Canterbury and what Canterbury stands for,” said Mr Machin. The Canterbury Progress League was the only organisation that was not sectional, he said. It supported projects for progress generally. Headed by an inner central executive, the league would gather momentum as it gathered public opinion. “The league will live and Canterbury will grow because of a change in organisation of the which is a body set apart for guiding, guarding and furthering progress in Canterbury,” Mr Machin said.
