SALMONELLOSIS OUTBREAK
“ RAW MILK A COMMON FACTOR” HEALTH DEPARTMENT * INQUIRIES The Health Department has established that all five families affected by salmonellosis since the week-end had drunk raw milk. The latest case was reported yesterday.
“As consumption of raw milk is the only common factor so far in the cases reported it must be taken into account,” said Dr. H. T. Knights, Deputy Medical Officer of Health in Christchurch, yesterday. Outbreaks of the illness had occurred in 10 families during the last five weeks and in “no less than eight, possibly nine, raw milk was taken in some form or another.”
All the milk in question in the recent five cases had come from one bulk raw milk supply, which was received from a large number of herds and distributed by a number of vendors, Dr. Knights said. Only a third of the milk from this bulk supply was pasteurised.
Tracing the original source of infection and the possibility of other infections was almost impracticable because of .the large number of herds involved and the many chances of contamination between milking and the consumer, Dr Knights said. Both humans and animals carrying the organisms could appear healthy. This showed how the health of the community could be jeopardised by the drinking of bulked raw milk in which it was difficult to avoid contamination. Dr. Knights said that the transmission of the disease from the original cases might afiect persons who took pasteurised milk. After all, if Wellington is to be given an international airport, even if 100 miles away, who will be strong enough to deny the claims of Dunedin, Invercargill, Palmerston North, Hamilton, and other places which might develop airports within or close to their own suburbs?
