U.S. BUTTER IN BRITAIN
“Monstrous Bargain” Charged PRESS CRITICISM IN LONDQN (NJZ. Press Association—Conyright) (Rec. W p.m.) LONDON, July 6. Britain has made “a monstrous bargain” with America on butter and has neglected her responsibilities to New Zealand, the “Daily Express” said today. In a leading article entitled “A Shameful Deal?’’ the “Daily Express” says: “Mr Sydney Holland, New Zealand's Prime Minister, reveals a new agreement under which Britain undertakes to limit imports .of dairy produce from America to 10,000 tons. This, he declares, has averted a crisis for his country. “But why should the British Government only go far enough to avert a New Zealand crisis? “It ought to be securing her salvation in abounding measure by buying none of this American produce. “Instead, a deal has been made to bring in stale American butter, 6000 tons of it at one go, and this butter does not come from ordinary production. It is the result of a controlled price system and is in effect a subsidised surplus. “Britain has made a monstrous bargain. It is a blow to farmers at home and in New Zealand.”
